Tensions flared at an African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) service on December 14, with church leaders now accusing unnamed members of parliament of orchestrating the disruption.

The service, attended by President William Ruto, reportedly saw political agendas clash with sacred proceedings, igniting public debate.

Speaking at a press briefing on December 20, Rev. Gabriel Kanjiri, a senior church leader, claimed that the disruption was carefully planned. “We have credible evidence, including video recordings, mobilisation messages, and financial transaction records, indicating that certain MPs coordinated the attendance of youths who interfered with the service,” he said.

The incident occurred as a group of individuals interrupted Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi while he delivered a speech, introduced by area MP Elijah Kururia.

Rev. Kanjiri emphasized that the church does not oppose politicians attending services but warned that manipulation of congregants for political ends would not be tolerated.

Adding fuel to the controversy, some women were seen in Women’s Council regalia, wearing trousers and makeup violating church dress codes.

The church clarified that these items were distributed by political operatives and not sanctioned by the AIPCA headquarters in Nairobi.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also weighed in, accusing President Ruto of using school buses to transport “goons and cheerleaders” to churches, a claim that has further intensified the political debate surrounding the incident.

Rev. Kanjiri urged politicians to exercise caution and respect the sanctity of church services, reiterating that the church welcomes leaders as long as they uphold moral conduct.

The church’s statement underscores growing concerns about the intersection of politics and religious spaces in Kenya, highlighting the need for clear boundaries to protect congregational integrity.

As investigations continue, the AIPCA controversy serves as a reminder of the sensitive balance between political activity and sacred spaces, a debate that is likely to resonate beyond Kiambu.
