In the past two years, the MultiChoice Group, which operates DStv and GOtv, has lost nearly 1.4 million subscribers in Nigeria.

Due to economic challenges, the corporation has also reported a significant decline in consumers across all its African operations.

Recent reports indicate that MultiChoice Group is considering launching a new bundle that will take users back to their decoder.

According to the MultiChoice Group’s most recent audited data, it has lost millions of subscribers in various countries during the past two extremely difficult years.

Over the past two years, pay-TV in Nigeria has lost 1.4 million subscribers, a decline attributed to rising energy prices and high inflation that have reduced the disposable income and purchasing power of the country’s citizens.

Due to financial hardship, Nigerians prioritised basic needs like food and shelter over alleged luxuries like pay-TV subscriptions.

Many houses are cancelling their DSTV and GOtv subscriptions as the cost of living in Nigeria increases.

According to the study, “Many households had no choice but to temporarily discontinue their DStv subscription due to financial difficulties.”

Of all the African nations where pay television is available, Nigeria’s inactive subscribers make up 77% of the overall number of lost subscribers.

Unbundling its well-liked SuperSport lineup from its other DStv channels is something MultiChoice thinks will help with a comprehensive channel composition review to adapt to shifting viewer tastes.

The broadcaster informed www.newsaih.com that it has intensified its investigation into possible modifications to the makeup of its DStv bouquets.

In addition to its primary subscription, MultiChoice’s potential new owner, Groupe Canal+, provides a sports-specific package.

Nine sports channels are included in the French broadcaster’s Canal+ Sport bundle, which costs €34.99 (R720) a month and includes an Apple TV+ subscription.

Should everything proceed as planned, the two broadcasters anticipate that the deal will be finalized by October 2025.
