Uhuru Kenyatta joins fellow co-facilitators for a key peace meeting in Lomé, Togo.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, together with other peace co-facilitators, held a crucial meeting in Lomé, Togo, to engage with African Union (AU) Mediator President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. The gathering aimed at reviewing and strengthening efforts toward peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Push for Stronger Dialogue with M23 Rebels
Uhuru confirmed that their discussions focused on promoting continued dialogue between the DRC leadership and the M23 rebel group. He noted that all parties emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation. Recent signs of progress between DRC and Rwanda, including a declared ceasefire, were also acknowledged as a step forward.
Leaders Support Peace Over Conflict
A statement from Uhuru’s office underlined that the panel and the AU Mediator stressed the urgency of inclusive conversations as the only path to lasting peace. They all stood together in support of a peaceful resolution that secures both stability and unity within DRC and the broader Great Lakes region.
Notable Peace Champions in Attendance
The peace team included respected African figures such as Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Botswana’s Mokgweetsi Masisi, Catherine Samba-Panza from the Central African Republic, and Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde. The meeting, held on May 17, showcased continental efforts toward ending the DRC crisis.
Praise for Togo President’s Mediation Role
President Faure Gnassingbé received strong praise for his recent role in pushing AU peace efforts. His leadership since becoming AU Mediator in April has been seen as steady and committed. The panel noted his dedication to unifying peace efforts across Africa.
How the Panel Came to Be
This mediation team was created in February during a joint summit between SADC and the EAC, co-led by Presidents William Ruto of Kenya and Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe. That meeting in Dar es Salaam aimed to combine the strengths of the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes into one focused mission. President João Lourenço of Angola, who previously served as AU Mediator, stepped down due to increased responsibilities as AU Chairperson and nominated Gnassingbé to take his place.
