Jeff Koinange’s exit from the Hot96 morning slot has sparked strong reactions after Royal Medpia Services rolled out a surprise presenter reshuffle.
Royal Media Services (RMS) has triggered nationwide conversation after confirming sweeping changes across its radio stations with celebrated journalist Jeff Koinange at the center of the shake-up.
The media giant says the move is part of a wider strategy to refresh programming and capture new audiences, but listeners were quick to voice their opinions online.
In the headline change, Jeff Koinange and longtime co-host Patrick Igunza are leaving the hugely popular Hot96 breakfast show and shifting to the evening drive slot.
Taking over mornings will be Nick Odhiambo alongside Cynthia Mwangi, a pairing expected to introduce a new tempo for early listeners.
Kenyans flooded social media moments after the announcement.
….Many fans said Jeff’s voice had become part of their daily routine, admitting the mornings won’t feel the same. Others welcomed the reshuffle, arguing that radio thrives on reinvention and bold programming decisions.
RMS Radio and ICT Director Fred Afune defended the move, saying repositioning experienced presenters encourages creativity while exposing audiences to fresh dynamics.
According to him, the reshuffle is meant to strengthen listenership across different time slots rather than disrupt fan favorites.
The reorganization extended beyond Hot96. Radio Citizen’s Jambo Kenya morning show will now feature Tina Ogal, Abdi Munai, and Kuka Kisondio, while Vincent Ateya and Melody Sinzore transition to afternoons.
Veteran presenter Willy Tuva’s move to a youth-focused show also signals RMS’ push to attract younger audiences.
Media analysts say such changes are common in competitive radio markets, where stations strategically distribute star presenters to maximize engagement.
Still, Jeff Koinange’s move remains the biggest talking point and many listeners will be watching closely to see how the revamped lineup performs in the coming weeks.
