Trump to meet 5 African heads of state on July 9

The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump will welcome leaders from five African nations for a high-level meeting in Washington next week. The main focus? Trade partnerships, not charity.

Set for July 9, the summit will bring together presidents from Senegal, Mauritania, Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, and Liberia. They will join Trump for lunch and business talks aimed at building new commercial ties.

Trump’s approach is clear: less dependency, more deals. The administration says it is shifting from a donation-based model to one that supports African nations that are ready to build economic independence.

“Countries must show the will and capacity to help themselves,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, echoing the administration’s “America First” trade lens.

During the July 9–11 summit, discussions will dive into investment opportunities in sectors such as technology, energy, and infrastructure. The goal is to spark growth through private sector deals instead of relying on government aid.

A White House source said Trump sees Africa’s potential as huge and wants American businesses to benefit alongside African economies.

This summit is also viewed as part of Trump’s broader plan to counter Chinese and Russian influence in Africa, both of which have been growing rapidly through loans, infrastructure, and resource deals across the continent.

The U.S. hopes that by promoting mutually beneficial trade, it can build stronger and more balanced partnerships that move beyond traditional development models.
