Brazil’s presidential election is heading to a second round after neither incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva nor right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro secured the majority needed to win the presidency outright.
The Brazil election 2026 will now be decided in a runoff between Lula of the Workers’ Party (PT) and Flavio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party (PL) on October 25.
According to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE), with virtually all votes counted, Flavio Bolsonaro received 47.03% of valid votes, while Lula received 45.16%. Flavio received more than 56.1 million votes, compared with about 53.9 million for Lula.
The result sets up another highly polarized presidential contest between Brazil’s left and right.
Brazil Election Heads to October 25 Runoff
The October 25 runoff will determine whether 80-year-old Lula wins another term or whether 45-year-old Flavio Bolsonaro becomes Brazil’s next president.
Brazil’s electoral calendar confirms that the second round will take place on October 25.
The first-round result was significant because Flavio finished ahead of Lula despite pre-election polls showing a much closer contest.
The two candidates will now compete for voters who supported candidates eliminated in the first round.
Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro Offer Different Visions
Lula is campaigning on a continuation of his government’s social programs, public investment and greater state involvement in the economy.
Flavio Bolsonaro, meanwhile, has campaigned on a smaller state, fiscal restraint, tougher policies against crime and a conservative political agenda.
The runoff is expected to focus heavily on the economy, public security, government spending and the future direction of Brazil.
Lula Seeks Another Presidential Term
Lula, 80, previously governed Brazil from 2003 to 2010 and returned to the presidency in 2023.
His current administration has highlighted falling unemployment, higher wages and reductions in Amazon deforestation as important achievements.
However, the government continues to face criticism over the cost of living, public spending and Brazil’s debt burden.
The runoff will give Lula another opportunity to defend his record and persuade voters that his administration should remain in power.
Flavio Bolsonaro Carries His Father’s Political Legacy
Flavio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and has positioned himself as the main conservative alternative to Lula.
His campaign has emphasized his father’s political legacy and opposition to what Bolsonaro supporters describe as excessive influence by Brazil’s institutions.
Jair Bolsonaro is serving a prison sentence after being convicted over an attempt to overturn the 2022 election result. Flavio has indicated that securing his father’s freedom is one of his major political objectives.
Flavio’s strong first-round performance demonstrates that Bolsonaro’s political movement remains a major force in Brazil despite the former president’s legal troubles.
Crime and Security Become Central Issues
Public security is expected to remain one of the biggest issues in the Brazil presidential runoff.
Organized criminal groups, including the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), have significant influence in parts of Brazil and remain a major concern for voters.
Flavio Bolsonaro has advocated a tougher approach toward organized crime, including expanded prison capacity and stronger security measures.
Lula has also made combating organized crime a priority but has emphasized targeting the financial networks that support criminal organizations.
Trump and Brazil’s Foreign Policy
Foreign policy is another major difference between the two candidates.
Flavio Bolsonaro has moved closer to the political camp of US President Donald Trump and has argued for stronger relations between Brazil and Washington.
Lula has emphasized Brazilian sovereignty and a more independent foreign policy while seeking to maintain working relations with the United States.
The result of the runoff could therefore have significant implications for US-Brazil relations and Brazil’s position in Latin America.
Brazil is the region’s largest economy and most populous country, making the election important beyond its borders.
Brazil Election Could Shift Latin American Politics
The election is taking place amid a broader political shift across parts of Latin America.
A Flavio Bolsonaro victory would strengthen the conservative bloc in the region and could bring Brazil closer to the United States and other right-leaning governments.
A Lula victory, by contrast, would preserve Brazil as an important center-left political force in Latin America.
The outcome could therefore influence regional diplomacy, trade and relations with Washington.
Banco Master Case Adds to Political Tensions
Brazil’s election campaign has also been affected by controversy surrounding Banco Master and investigations involving its former owner, Daniel Vorcaro.
The case has generated political tensions and renewed scrutiny of Brazil’s financial system and institutions.
Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has also faced political criticism in connection with the broader controversy. Allegations involving Moraes and his family have been denied, while the dispute has become part of the wider political battle between Bolsonaro supporters and Brazil’s institutions.
The issue is likely to remain politically sensitive as the country moves toward the October 25 runoff.
What Happens Next in Brazil?
Flavio Bolsonaro and Lula now have three weeks to campaign for the October 25 runoff.
Flavio enters the second round with the advantage of finishing first, but Lula remains a powerful political figure with a large and established voter base.
The candidates will focus on persuading voters who backed other presidential contenders in the first round.
The final result will determine whether Brazil continues under Lula’s left-wing government or begins a new conservative era under Flavio Bolsonaro.
