Trump Rejects Iran’s Hormuz Proposal as Strait Crisis Deepens

By Dan Mughogho — September 26, 2026

Iran has proposed a plan to the United States that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz within a week.

The Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump rejected the proposal, although US authorities had not officially responded to the announcement at the time of the initial report. Trump later publicly confirmed that he had rejected Iran’s proposal.

Iran Proposes Seven-Day Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Iran proposed a plan to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, but the Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump rejected it.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres that Iran had not walked away from the negotiating table.

“However, given past experiences, it no longer trusts the United States,” the Iranian presidency added.

Trump Rejects Iran Proposal

Trump is considering resuming airstrikes in November.

On his Truth Social platform, the US president posted a map showing the strategic Strait of Hormuz labeled “Trump Strait.”

The waterway, through which one-fifth of the world’s hydrocarbons used to transit, lies at the heart of the conflict sparked in late February by US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Since then, the Islamic Republic has claimed control over the strait, while Washington has imposed a retaliatory blockade on Iranian ports.

Iran Says It Remains Open to Negotiations

After nearly seven months of war and stalled negotiations, Iran now considers that the choice of whether or not to accept its proposal “lies with Washington.”

The seven-day timeframe for reopening the maritime passage, currently blocked by Tehran, “will begin as soon as the United States accepts this plan,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated from New York.

Citing US officials, the Wall Street Journal reported that Donald Trump rejected the offer, saying Tehran would not meet his demands.

Iranian officials have continued to indicate that diplomacy remains possible, while saying Tehran is waiting for an official US response through mediators.

Trump Reportedly Plans to Resume Airstrikes

According to the Wall Street Journal report, Trump is considering resuming strikes on Iran after the midterm elections in November.

The report said US officials believe renewed military action could follow the elections, although this was reported as a future possibility rather than a confirmed timetable.

The United States has already spent $38 billion to wage its war against Iran.

The Americans have not bombed Iranian soil since September 1, when a series of attacks left five people dead and dozens injured, notably at a wedding in the southeast of the country.

Since that date, however, ships have been hit in the Strait of Hormuz.

Strait of Hormuz Remains at the Center of the Crisis

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major point of tension between Iran and the United States.

Iran’s proposal would reopen the strategic waterway within seven days if Washington accepts the plan and the agreed conditions are met.

For now, however, the proposal remains unresolved as both sides continue to disagree over the terms of any possible agreement.
