Bangkok has been declared a disaster-affected area after heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across Thailand’s capital.
Nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell in Bangkok within 48 hours, flooding major roads, homes and low-lying areas. All 50 districts of Bangkok have been declared flood disaster areas to help authorities respond to the emergency.
The flooding is also affecting other parts of Thailand. More than 84,000 people across 21 provinces have been affected, according to reports cited in the original coverage.
Heavy Rain Causes Severe Bangkok Flooding
Torrential rain has caused major flooding across Bangkok, with some roads becoming difficult or impossible to use.
Several vehicles were partly submerged, while residents in heavily flooded areas were forced to walk through deep water.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the flooding posed risks to people’s lives and could damage public and private property.
The situation was reported to be particularly serious in areas near canals, where residents were advised to move their belongings to higher ground.
All 50 Bangkok Districts Declared Disaster Areas
Although flooding has not affected every part of the capital equally, authorities declared all 50 Bangkok districts disaster-affected areas.
The move allows officials to coordinate emergency operations and respond more quickly to areas experiencing serious flooding.
More than 200 shelters were established across Bangkok as authorities prepared for residents who needed to leave flooded homes.
Thousands of people have also sought shelter as floodwaters affected residential areas.
One Bangkok resident, Suppakarn Julavijitphong, described moving luggage from a condominium surrounded by floodwater after receiving warnings.
More Than 84,000 People Affected Across Thailand
The Bangkok flooding is part of a wider period of heavy rain affecting Thailand.
Around 84,600 people were reported to be affected nationwide, with 21 provinces and 1,425 villages experiencing the effects of the severe weather.
Authorities have been operating shelters, rescue teams and water-pumping systems to manage the flooding and assist affected communities.
Further heavy to very heavy rainfall was also forecast for September 26 and 27, raising concerns that flooding could continue in some areas.
Roads and Traffic Disrupted in Bangkok
Flooding has caused major traffic problems across the capital.
Several major roads were covered by water, leaving cars partially submerged and forcing people to find alternative routes.
The flooding has also affected normal travel times across Bangkok, with authorities warning residents and visitors to allow additional time for journeys.
Despite the disruption, Bangkok’s main airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport, remained operational.
Air traffic operations were reported to be normal, although travellers were advised to allow extra time because of difficult road conditions and traffic delays.
Shelters and Emergency Response Underway
Bangkok authorities have opened more than 200 shelters for people affected by the flooding.
Rescue teams and water-pumping systems are being used to remove floodwater as quickly as possible.
Authorities have also issued warnings to residents living near canals, advising them to protect important belongings and move to higher ground where necessary.
Officials said flooding could recede after the heavy rain stops, although the speed of recovery will depend on rainfall and drainage conditions.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Thailand
Thailand’s weather authorities warned of additional thunderstorms and heavy rainfall during the weekend.
The continued rainfall could increase flooding in Bangkok and other affected parts of the country.
Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to monitor official warnings and follow instructions from local authorities.
The situation remains closely watched as emergency agencies continue rescue, drainage and shelter operations.
