A British mum-of-two who was kidnapped in Malawi last week has been found safe following a rescue operation. Nusrat Osman, 47, was abducted at around 12.30pm local time on September 11 in Blantyre by four men travelling in a grey Nissan Dualis, according to police.

The motive was unclear, and the suspects made no contact with the woman’s family.

Inspector General Richard Luhanga, the head of the Malawi police, told news publication that the 47-year-old was safe but declined to give more details.

He said police would release a statement at a later time.

Osman’s brother, Shobi Jiwa, told Newsaih.com that the mum of two was rescued in an operation in which Luhanga’s deputy inspector general was shot and wounded.

The family described the officer as a “hero”. “He is the hero of our family. He’s the hero of the country. He’s the hero of the world, actually, for putting his life at risk and taking a bullet into himself for my sister.”

He added that his sister is not “too shaken” after the events and described her as a “humble soul and a beautiful person”. Osman’s family, “We thank the Malawi Police Service for their swift action, professionalism and commitment. In them we trust.”

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in the country, Noel Kaiyira, is receiving treatment at a hospital in Blantyre.

This happened this afternoon at Chadzunda in the city of Blantyre.

Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito has confirmed that the British national, Nusrat Jiwa Osman, has been rescued by police led by Kayira after exchanging fire with the criminals, and the suspects are currently in police custody.
