Kenya has officially supported Morocco’s proposal on Western Sahara’s autonomy.

Kenya has taken a clear position in the Western Sahara dispute by supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan. This development came during high-level discussions in Rabat, where both countries issued a joint statement recognising the Moroccan proposal as the only serious and lasting solution to the conflict. The long-running dispute, active since 1975, pits Morocco against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks full independence for the territory.

Marking six decades of diplomatic engagement, Kenya officially launched its new embassy in Rabat—signalling not only a milestone in bilateral relations but also a stronger presence in North Africa. This step reinforces Kenya’s intention to play a more strategic role in regional diplomacy and cooperation.

Trade, Energy, and Cultural Exchange Top Agenda

Economic matters featured prominently in the talks. Morocco, known globally for its phosphate and fertiliser production, pledged to fast-track the supply of soil nutrients to Kenya. This move aligns with Kenya’s effort to strengthen its agricultural sector. In return, Kenya plans to increase exports of tea, coffee, and fresh produce to the Moroccan market, a move aimed at narrowing the trade gap between the two nations.

The two sides also agreed to collaborate in renewable energy, fisheries, security operations, and even cultural and religious programs. Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi emphasised the need to balance trade ties, posting on X about the goal to boost Kenyan products in Moroccan markets.

Additionally, Kenya showed support for Morocco’s plan to assist landlocked Sahel countries in reaching international markets through Moroccan Atlantic ports—a move that could reshape regional trade routes in Africa.

By aligning with Morocco and strengthening economic partnerships, Kenya is not only reaffirming its diplomatic alliances but also looking to expand its trade and strategic presence across the continent.
