Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki Sentenced
The criminal division addressing terrorism-related cases at the Tunis Court of First Instance has sentenced former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki to a 22-year prison term, effective immediately, in his absence.
A similar sentence was issued for his former advisor, Imed Daimi, and the past president of the bar association, Abderrazak Kilani.
The court’s decision was revealed on Friday and pertains to charges associated with terrorism; however, specific information regarding the case and accusations has not been disclosed publicly.
As all three individuals are currently avoiding arrest outside the country, the ruling was made without their attendance. Two other defendants, also fugitives, received identical sentences for comparable crimes.
Judicial sources report that the indictment chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal had previously referred their case to be examined by the criminal division of the First Instance court. As a result, this division was responsible for evaluating multiple allegations related to terrorist activities, although detailed information about these charges remains unavailable.
