Political tension is rising in Uganda after the United States government issued a strong warning to President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, citing alleged election violence, repression, and serious democratic backsliding following the controversial 2026 general elections.

Uganda is facing growing international pressure after Washington signaled it could impose heavy sanctions on officials linked to what it described as a deeply flawed electoral process.

The warning came as reports continue to emerge of intimidation, arrests, and force used against opposition figures and their supporters during and after the polls.

In a statement released after the elections, the U.S. State Department said it was “gravely concerned” by the conduct of the vote, pointing to widespread irregularities that undermined its credibility.

American officials referenced reports of harassment of opposition candidates, blocked campaign activities, and restrictions on basic freedoms such as assembly and expression.

Kampala and other major towns witnessed a heavy deployment of security forces in the days surrounding the election.

Armored vehicles, roadblocks, and armed officers became a common sight, creating an atmosphere of fear rather than calm.

Human rights groups say clashes between civilians and security agencies left several people injured, while dozens of opposition supporters and activists were arrested.

One of the most controversial actions by the government was the nationwide internet shutdown imposed before voting day.

The blackout cut off access to social media, messaging apps, and independent news platforms, making it nearly impossible for citizens, journalists, and observers to share real-time information or verify events on the ground.

For years, Uganda has maintained working relations with Western partners despite long-standing concerns over governance and civil liberties.

However, analysts say the 2026 elections may mark a turning point, as the scale of reported abuses appears to have hardened attitudes among key international allies.

Washington warned that if the situation does not improve, targeted sanctions could follow. These may include travel bans, visa restrictions, and a review of bilateral aid and cooperation programs aimed at individuals considered responsible for undermining democracy.

While the ruling government retained power, critics argue the biggest losers are ordinary Ugandans who had hoped for a transparent and peaceful election.

Instead, many now face an uncertain future as domestic political tensions spill onto the international stage, threatening Uganda’s diplomatic standing and economic partnerships.

As pressure mounts, all eyes remain on how Kampala responds and whether the standoff with the United States will escalate further in the weeks ahead.
