Motorists leaving Nairobi now have a faster and safer option, as the government has announced the completion of the 66-kilometre Ngong–Suswa Highway.
The new road cuts across Kajiado North and Kajiado West, providing a direct route for travellers heading to Narok, Bomet, Kisii, Kericho, and parts of Nyanza.
According to the State Department for Roads, the highway will significantly ease congestion along the busy Mai Mahiu escarpment road while improving safety standards for all road users.
“The Ngong–Suswa Highway is now complete, offering a modern, safer, and more direct corridor out of Nairobi through Ngong,” the department said.

The highway is also expected to boost economic activity in the Rift Valley and Nyanza regions by improving connectivity for trade, tourism, and local communities.
Scenic views and long stretches of open road are likely to make it a popular choice for road-trip enthusiasts.
Earlier this year, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo highlighted the economic benefits, noting that land values along the route have surged and new infrastructure, including petrol stations, markets, and service centres, has started to emerge.
He added that the road is a key project under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The announcement comes just days after President William Ruto launched the Ksh170 billion Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Road and the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Project.

Both projects are being implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, which Ruto says allows Kenya to fund modern transport infrastructure without overstraining the national budget.
“The PPP model is a smart strategy to unlock resources, enabling the government to work efficiently alongside the private sector,” the President stated during the launch.
With the Ngong–Suswa Highway now operational, commuters and transporters can look forward to faster, safer, and more enjoyable journeys out of Nairobi while supporting regional growth.
