Malawi Electoral Commission announces Peter Mutharika as the winner of the 2025 presidential election.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) the winner of the September 16 Presidential elections.
Announcing the results at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Wednesday evening, MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja said Mutharika secured the majority of votes cast nationwide.
“The results we are announcing today reflect the will of Malawians as expressed through the ballot,” Mtalimanja said, noting that all complaints received during the process were addressed in accordance with the law.
Here is MEC full voting statistics 7,203,390 registered voters, a total of 5,502,982 voters turned up for voting representing 76.4 percent.
There were 155,225 void votes. This represents 2.8 percent.
There were 5,347,757 total valid votes distributed as follows:
1. Dr. Joyce Hilda BANDA of the People’s Party (PP), 86,106 votes representing 1.6 percent of total valid votes
2. Thokozani Manyika BANDA, INDEPENDENT; 22,614 votes representing 0.4 percent of total valid votes
3. Akwame BANDAWE of Anyamata, Atsikana, Azimayi (AAA), 40,052 votes representing 0.7 percent of total valid votes
4. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy CHAKWERA of Malawi Congress Party (MCP), 1,765,170 votes representing 33.0 percent of total valid votes
5. Kamuzu CHIBAMBO of People’s Transformation Party (PETRA) 17,274 votes representing 0.3 percent of total valid votes
6. Adil James CHILUNGO, INDEPENDENT, 8,462 votes representing 0.2 percent of total valid votes
7. Cosmas Felix CHIPOJOLA, INDEPENDENT, 8,638 votes representing 0.2 percent of total valid votes
8. Dr. Dalitso KABAMBE of UTM Party (UTM), 211,413 votes representing 4.0 percent of total valid votes
9. Atupele Austin MULUZI of the United Democratic Front (UDF), 102,744 votes representing 1.9 percent of total valid votes
10. Prof. Arthur Peter MUTHARIKA of the Democratic Progressive (DPP), 3,035,249 votes representing 56.8 percent of total valid votes
11. Phunziro MVULA, INDEPENDENT, 9,378 votes representing 0.2 percent of total valid votes
12. Frank Tumpale MWENIFUMBO, of the National Development Party (NDP), 5,354 votes representing 0.1 percent of total valid votes.
13. Dr. Kondwani NANKHUMWA of the People’s Development Party (PDP), 12,251 votes representing 0.2 percent of total valid votes.
14. Jordan SAUTI of the Patriotic Citizens Party (PCP) 2,196 votes representing 0.04 percent of total valid votes.
15. Smart Mulumbe SWIRA, INDEPENDENT, 1,848 votes representing 0.03 percent of total valid votes.
16. Milward TOBIAS, INDEPENDENT, 2,086 votes representing 0.04 percent of total valid votes
17. Dr. Michael Bizwick USI of the Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu (Odya Zake), 16,922 votes representing 0.3 percent of total valid votes
The declaration ceremony was attended by political party representatives, government officials, members of the diplomatic community, civil society organizations, and election observers.
MEC has since urged all stakeholders to accept the outcome and work together in preserving peace and unity in the country.
