Trump extends China tariff deadline by 90 days

  • President Donald Trump signed an executive order extending the pause on Chinese tariffs for another 90 days until November 9, as negotiations continue.
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed optimism about the potential for a trade deal between the United States and China.
  • Trump’s economic advisers held a productive meeting with China, aiming for a provisional agreement before the tariff deadline.

Shortly before they were due to take effect, US President Trump postponed the new tariffs against China again, according to several US media outlets. Otherwise, reciprocal tariffs of well over 100 percent would have been imposed.

The United States has postponed the introduction of its threatened tariffs against China for another 90 days—shortly before they were due to take effect. US President Donald Trump signed a corresponding decree, the news agency Reuters and the broadcaster CNBC reported, citing White House officials. No comment from China was immediately available.

Trump had recently expressed optimism about the progress of the negotiations. He told reporters at the White House that the negotiations were going “pretty well.” He also emphasized his “very good relationship” with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China hopes for “positive results” in the tariff conflict

The Chinese leadership had recently declared its hope for “positive results” in the tariff dispute. “We hope that the US will work with China (…) to pursue positive results based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.

Trump imposed high tariffs on China in early April . Beijing responded with counter-tariffs , whereupon Trump in turn increased his tariffs. At one point, the tariff level on both sides was well over 100 percent. In mid-May, the two countries agreed at talks in Geneva to significantly reduce the surcharges for an initial period of 90 days . This agreement would have expired on August 12.
