Kenya has recorded 314 Mpox (Monkeypox) cases in 22 counties since July 2024.

The Ministry of Health has officially confirmed that a total of 314 Mpox cases have been detected in 22 counties, with Mombasa being the hardest hit. Since the outbreak began in July 2024, the disease has so far claimed five lives, representing a 1.6% fatality rate.

Health CS Aden Duale noted that Mombasa has 149 confirmed infections, with Busia (63) and Nakuru (21) also among the most affected counties. Others like Kilifi (19), Nairobi (20), and Makueni (13) have also reported significant numbers, while several counties recorded fewer than five.

According to data shared by the ministry, 33 patients are hospitalized, and 54 are receiving care at home. Encouragingly, 222 individuals have recovered from the virus. These cases were derived from 905 samples tested, representing a positivity rate of 34.6%.

Officials have also identified 422 contacts of confirmed cases. Out of these, 392 remain under observation, and 15 have tested positive during their 21-day monitoring period.

In response to the growing threat, the government has increased screening of travelers, with over 4.7 million people screened at airports and border points. Suspected cases are referred to designated centers for testing and treatment.

To contain the spread, Rapid Response Teams have been deployed across counties. These teams are handling case identification, contact tracing, public sensitization, and patient care.

The Ministry is urging the public to observe strict hygiene measures, including regular handwashing, use of sanitizers, and avoiding physical contact with infected individuals. People are also advised not to share personal items and to engage in safe sexual practices.

CS Duale emphasized that the government is closely monitoring the situation and committed to protecting citizens. He also cautioned against misinformation and encouraged Kenyans to rely only on official government updates.

Kenyans are advised to self-isolate if they experience Mpox symptoms and seek help only from certified medical facilities.
