90-Day Reciprocal Tariff Pause Announced by Trump—China Excluded from Relief

90-Day Reciprocal Tariff Pause: In a bold new move that could shake global trade markets, former U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced a 90-day reciprocal tariff pause, granting temporary tariff relief to most countries—except China.

90-Day Reciprocal Tariff Pause Targets Over 75 Nations

Speaking via his Truth Social platform, Trump declared that he would authorize a 90-day reciprocal tariff pause, cutting tariffs to 10% for more than 75 countries that had reached out requesting negotiations. The former president noted that the relief was effective immediately.

“I authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%,” Trump posted. “This pause gives fair nations a chance to come to the table.”

The 90-day reciprocal tariff pause aims to de-escalate trade tensions while rewarding countries seen as respecting global trade norms.

China Hit with 125% Tariff Amid Reciprocal Pause

However, the gesture did not extend to China. Citing a “lack of respect” for global markets, Trump imposed an aggressive 125% tariff on Chinese imports—effective immediately.

“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%,” Trump wrote.

While the 90-day reciprocal tariff pause applies to dozens of trading partners, Trump’s message made clear that China remains on a separate and more punitive track.

Market Reactions Mixed to Reciprocal Tariff Pause

The announcement of the 90-day reciprocal tariff pause drew mixed responses from global markets and economists. Some praised the pause as a chance for economic cooling, while others warned it may be a temporary fix that fails to address deeper trade imbalances.

Analysts noted that the 10% flat tariff under the 90-day reciprocal tariff pause might offer temporary clarity to importers and exporters still reeling from years of uncertainty in U.S. trade policy.

Trade Talks Expected as Reciprocal Pause Takes Effect

The 90-day reciprocal tariff pause opens a window for rapid diplomatic engagement. Over 75 countries are reportedly preparing to send representatives to Washington to begin trade talks.

Observers say this could also mark the start of a more measured U.S. approach to reciprocal tariffs—if the pause leads to lasting agreements.

China’s Response to U.S. Tariff Hike Remains Unclear

As the 90-day reciprocal tariff pause excludes China, Beijing’s next move is being closely watched. The 125% tariff could escalate tensions and spark retaliation.

So far, Chinese officials have not issued a formal response to the sudden increase. However, economic analysts suggest countermeasures could follow swiftly if backroom negotiations fail.
