Two African female leaders convened: In a significant diplomatic meeting, Africa’s two current female presidents, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, gathered in Dar es Salaam to explore ways to enhance bilateral relations and promote women’s leadership throughout the continent.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah, who achieved a historic milestone in March 2025 as Namibia’s first female head of state, received a warm welcome from President Hassan. Their meeting emphasised the increasing impact of women in African leadership and showcased the lasting partnership between the two nations.
President Hassan, in a thoughtful reflection on their shared history, stated, “Tanzania takes pride in witnessing the daughter we nurtured and raised with love and compassion ascend to the highest office in Namibia.” She stressed the need for collaboration among African nations to tackle shared challenges, including economic development, climate change, and regional security.
In their discussions, the two leaders examined opportunities to strengthen collaboration in trade, education, and cultural exchange. They reiterated their dedication to advancing gender equality and enhancing women’s leadership positions throughout Africa.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah conveyed her appreciation for Tanzania’s assistance during Namibia’s liberation struggle and recognized the significant influence Tanzania had on her personal and political growth. She expressed, “Our collective history unites us, and together, we can create a future of prosperity and equality for our communities.”
The meeting concluded with both presidents committing to ongoing collaboration aimed at enhancing the relationship between Namibia and Tanzania, as well as advocating for women’s leadership across the African continent.
In a recent meeting, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her admiration for her Namibian counterpart, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, by referring to her as “a sister to me,” highlighting the strong relationship between the two leaders.
