Environmental stories have continued to shape national conversations as young activists push for new ways to highlight the climate crisis.

Among these rising figures is Truphena Muthoni, whose bold record attempts have drawn attention across the country.

Truphena Muthoni is a 22 year old Kenyan environmentalist who has become known for breaking tree hugging records. She is attempting a new Guinness World Record by hugging a tree for 72 hours in her home county of Nyeri.

Her latest challenge began outside the office of Nyeri Governor Kahiga Mutahi where she committed herself to a strict set of rules. She must stay in contact with the tree with no food, no water and no breaks throughout the entire period.

The young environmentalist gained national attention earlier in February 2025 after completing her first record in Nairobi.

She hugged a tree at Michuki Memorial Park for 48 hours which placed her name in the Guinness World Records.

Her first success came after months of intensive preparation that included long distance walks and mental training.

She also drew inspiration from the late Environment Minister John Michuki whose work helped restore the popular park.

Truphena Muthoni uses tree hugging as a statement to link environmental conservation with mental health concerns.

She believes nature offers relief to people facing pressure and encourages young people to spend more time in green spaces.

Her actions have earned her support from national leaders including Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme Ababu Namwamba. He praised her commitment and said her efforts highlight the role of youth in climate action.

The new 72 hour record attempt has faced challenges including heavy rain in Nyeri. However she has remained focused as residents follow her progress with interest and admiration.
