Pope Leo XIV was officially inaugurated at a grand Mass in Vatican City.
Thousands of believers and visitors gathered at St Peter’s Square to witness the start of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy. The large crowd included both religious pilgrims and curious tourists, many cheering as the new pope appeared in the popemobile.
Joe, a visitor from the U.S., shared his excitement:
“I’m not Catholic, but this experience is something I’ll never forget. It’s deeply moving.”
Another attendee, Pia—a Chilean professor living in Rome—described the moment as hopeful. She remembered the Pope’s first public words:
“Let the peace be with you… Don’t be afraid,”
adding that it felt like the Church was turning a page toward a more open future.
World Leaders Attend the Ceremony
Among the many dignitaries present were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Their presence signaled the international importance of this papacy, especially as the world faces rising conflict and division.
After the Mass, President Zelensky held a private meeting with the Pope. He thanked him for his firm stand on peace and appreciated the Vatican’s openness to host direct peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
A Strong Stand Against War and Oppression
During his first address as pope, Leo XIV spoke strongly against war, hatred, and poverty. He pointed to the pain caused by the Ukraine conflict and urged all nations to choose compassion over conflict.
He also criticized economic systems that harm the poor and the planet, calling for justice and environmental care. His words showed a strong commitment to unity, peace, and the welfare of all people.
Symbolic Acts and a Humble Pledge
In one of the most sacred moments of the day, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines placed the Ring of the Fisherman on Pope Leo’s finger. He was also given the pallium, a wool garment that shows his role as shepherd of the Church.
Holding the Book of the Gospels, the Pope raised it high to bless the people, marking the beginning of his spiritual mission.
He told the crowd that he would never let pride or power guide him, promising instead to lead with humility and listen to the voice of the people. He reminded the world that the Church must be a place of mercy, not control.
