PJS says over 219 journalists have been killed since October 2023.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) has released a worrying report accusing the Israeli military of carrying out targeted attacks on media workers and their families. According to the report, at least 219 journalists and media staff have been killed since October 7, 2023, with 30 of them being women.
The press body described the attacks as intentional and called them part of a wider plan to silence journalists reporting on the suffering in Gaza.
Hundreds More Injured, Families Also Affected
The PJS also reported that about 430 journalists have been injured in the ongoing conflict. Adding to the tragedy, 685 family members of journalists are said to have been killed during the same period. The syndicate says this shows how deep the impact of the war has gone—even beyond the reporters themselves.
“This is a brutal violation of international laws protecting the press,” the syndicate noted.
Journalists Forced to Work While Fleeing
Conditions for media workers in Gaza continue to worsen. The PJS stated that over 1,000 journalists are living in constant displacement, being forced to move from one place to another as Israeli airstrikes destroy civilian areas.
The situation has made it hard for the press to operate safely, with many risking their lives just to report what is happening on the ground.
Global Action Needed to Protect the Free Press
The PJS is now urging human rights bodies, media watchdogs, and global press organizations to step in and take immediate action. The syndicate wants those responsible for the killings to be held accountable and has described the attacks as “war crimes against the media.”
“Killing journalists and their families is not just an attack on individuals—it is an attempt to stop the world from seeing the truth,” the PJS said.
Israel Yet to Respond to Accusations
Israeli authorities have not officially replied to the latest claims. In previous statements, the Israeli military has denied targeting journalists, saying its focus is on eliminating threats from armed groups hiding in civilian spaces.
But with pressure growing from around the world, many are demanding an independent probe into the deaths of journalists to find out the truth and protect media freedom during conflicts.
