Maurice Muendo’s first feature film, BOBO, will debut on Showmax this May.

Maurice Muendo, a local creative and graduate of the MultiChoice Talent Factory, is preparing for a major milestone in his career. His first film as a director, BOBO, is set to premiere on Showmax this May. The drama made waves at the 2025 Joburg Film Festival, where it drew strong positive reactions from viewers and critics.

A Story Rooted in Community Struggles

The film follows the journey of a young girl named Bobo who, after missing a life-changing scholarship, finds out her family is on the verge of losing their land to a ruthless moneylender. As she grapples with growing pressure from home and society, Bobo learns that the road to her dreams is filled with heavy choices and tough moments.

Fresh Faces and Familiar Stars

Taking the lead is newcomer Faith Muthoni, playing Bobo. She is supported by well-known actors such as Kelly Njeri Gathoni (Jiji), Zak Matasi (4Play), Elvis Makutsa (Selina), Thuita Mwangi (Pepeta), Naitwa Louisa (Kina), and Catherine Buluma (Tehanani), making for a rich and talented cast.

Made for the People, with the People

Muendo, who also produced the film under his company African Dopler Limited, worked alongside fellow MTF graduate Bruno Tanya, who wrote the screenplay. For Maurice, the film reflects his own background and the stories of many others from similar neighbourhoods.

“This story reminded me of my own upbringing in Eastleigh, where chasing dreams meant facing countless barriers. That’s why BOBO meant a lot to me,” Maurice shared.

“Choosing Mathare as the setting wasn’t random. It had to be there – the people, the streets, the vibe – it all helped shape the story’s truth,” he added.

Selected from Hundreds of New Voices

BOBO came to life after Showmax and Joburg Film Festival opened submissions for new directors from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. Out of 296 entries, BOBO was handpicked by a jury of top African filmmakers and curators, including Femi Odugbemi, Njoki Muhoho, Pat van Heerden, and former MTF regional director Cheryl Uys-Allie.

This release not only marks a powerful debut for Maurice but also highlights the rising talent within Kenya’s film scene, especially from underrepresented communities.
