Trade unionist Francis Atwoli declares he has two wives and defends polygamy. He claims to move with police protection to avoid confrontation over his family life.
Trade unionist Francis Atwoli has once again sparked public debate after openly defending polygamy during a recent public appearance.
Atwoli, known for his outspoken personality, proudly declared that he has two wives and joked that he moves with police protection to deter anyone who might confront him about his family life.
“Kama uko na bibi mmoja, shenzi sana! Mimi niko na bibi wawili, na huwa natembea na polisi ndio musiniibie,” Atwoli said.
His statement quickly went viral, reigniting discussions on marriage customs, masculinity, and cultural identity in Kenya.
Supporters praised his confidence, saying polygamy remains part of traditional African values, while critics accused him of being insensitive — especially over his claim about police protection.
Social media users expressed mixed views. Some applauded Atwoli’s openness, joking about “upgrading” their own marital status, while others questioned whether public figures should invoke state protection in personal matters.
Experts on gender and law reminded the public that polygamy is recognised under Kenyan customary and Islamic laws, but urged public figures to speak on such matters with care and respect.
They emphasised that discussions about marriage should uphold the principles of consent, equality, and family welfare.
Atwoli’s remarks add to his long record of bold statements that often draw public attention and fuel national debate. Despite criticism, he remains unapologetic about his cultural and personal beliefs.
