Floyd Shivambu dismissed as SG of the MK Party: the former Secretary-General of Jacob Zuma’s MK Party has been repurposed as a Member of Parliament.
This comes after the MK Party confirmed on Tuesday that an unauthorised trip to Malawi had breached Section 3(j) of the party constitution.
Former President Jacob Zuma praised the leadership’s prompt and coordinated response when the transfer was disclosed during a news briefing.
Background: The trip to Malawi and the constitutional violation
South Africa’s plea for the extradition of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, who fled on bail pending fraud and other allegations, was granted by Malawi’s Chief Resident Magistrate on March 12, 2025.
Shivambu met with Bushiri on his visit to Malawi in late May, an action that the party leadership considered illegal and against the MK constitution.
Section 3(j) forbids participation in foreign operations that contradict party ideals, prompting the reassignment of Shivambu.
Zuma and National Leaders Denounce Visit
Nkosinathi Nhleko, the chairman of the MK Party, denounced Shivambu’s behavior during the media conference by quoting President Zuma:
Shivambu’s acts were determined to be against the MK Party Constitution’s spirit and guidelines. The journey was not formally approved by the government. it violates the constitution.
The leadership clearly stated that the visit contradicted the party’s image, ideals, and strategy.
They emphasised the significance of organisational discipline, noting that civil society actions had increased pressure on the party to make amends.
Redeploying is a tactic, not a failure.
The leadership chose to make use of Shivambu’s abilities rather than dismiss him. In order to strengthen the MK caucus, he will continue to serve in Parliament.
As a former member of Parliament, Commander Floyd Shivambu has a wealth of expertise; thus, we think his redeployment will strengthen the MK Party caucus as the official opposition.
Shivambu acknowledged his regret for the visit and reaffirmed his dedication to the party’s goals while accepting the decision.
Viewed by analysts as a political reorientation
Shivambu’s redeployment is interpreted by political experts as a reflection of the MK Party’s fundamental power dynamics.
According to experts like Siyabonga Ntombela of UKZN, the action serves as a confinement and reward strategy:
“Floyd completes his task. The time has come to both reward them and confront Malema.
They also highlight internal conflicts, especially those involving Shivambu, Zuma’s daughter Duduzile, and rival politicians like Mzwanele Manyi.
Academics also warn that battling ethnic factionalism and Zuma-era politics will be crucial to Shivambu’s political destiny.
Nkholiwe Ndlovu’s observation that Shivambu is the third SG in as many years raised concerns regarding stability.
Zuma’s Letter to the Civil Society
Zuma directly responded to questions about the trip, stating that national security and MK’s policy agenda were in harmony.
“We got letters from civic society… We felt it was crucial to inform the nation about the events and the reasons behind them.
Regarding claims of “white genocide” and pressure from other countries, Zuma rejected sensationalism, saying,
Genocide does not exist in South Africa. I accept it. It’s just a joke.
Within the Press Conference
The MK Party national spokesperson conducted the media briefing, which was also attended by party dignitaries, including Zuma, National Chairperson Nhleko, Deputy President John Hlophe, and Secretary-General Shivambu in his last role. Following the speech, Shivambu promised to continue serving and confirmed his acceptance.
Zuma prohibited dissident inquiries and instructed participants to adhere to the message and refrain from reopening internal discussions. Inquiries beyond the Malawi tour were not entertained by Zuma.
What MK and National Politics Stand to Gain from This
Organizational Discipline: MK showed that it adheres to its charter, especially when it comes to senior executives.
Strengthening of Parliament: Using his experience and prominence, Shivambu moves into a position with national exposure.
The maneuver may reset internal power dynamics, and Mzwanele Manyi is being considered as a potential successor.
Public Perception:
Swift action and public accountability could enhance MK’s credibility before the following elections.
There is no new Secretary-General declared by The Road Ahead MK. Analysts will closely examine the possibility that Manyi, Zuma’s daughter Duduzile, or another insider may fill the position.
Along with keeping up its momentum on anti-corruption messaging, the party is also getting ready for the next municipal elections.
As it enters the 2026 local government elections, its significance will be determined by how well it strikes a balance between internal unity and public perception.
