A Voi court has ruled that Geoffrey Kimonge, a former political advisor to ex-Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu, must refund Ksh 12,458,990 to the Government of Kenya.
The case was filed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which obtained a court order on February 28 for the recovery of the stolen funds.
According to EACC, Kimonge illegally and fraudulently acquired public money by applying for imprest for fictitious activities during his tenure in office.
“The court found that Kimonge had unjustly enriched himself with public funds, contrary to the law,” read part of the judgment.
Court’s Ruling: Pay Ksh 12.4M with Interest
Voi Chief Magistrate Mildred Obura ruled that Kimonge’s actions amounted to embezzlement, leading to the misuse of taxpayers’ money.
The court ordered Kimonge to:
- Refund Ksh 12,458,990 to the Government of Kenya.
- Pay interest at commercial rates from the date of acquisition until the full amount is settled.
The ruling marks another victory for EACC in its fight against corruption and misappropriation of public funds.
