Delhi Protest: Rahul & Priyanka Gandhi Detained, Then Released

Police detained several leaders of the opposition alliance, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka, after a long protest and sit-in against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in India.

The capital Delhi is witnessing a massive protest by the opposition against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in India.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and leaders of the Congress and opposition alliance ‘India’, including the BJP, sat on a dharna demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.

After a nine-hour-long protest and sit-in, Delhi Police detained several leaders of the opposition alliance, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi.

They were picked up in a bus from in front of Akashvani Bhavan in Delhi around 8 pm on Tuesday and taken to Kingsway Camp Police Station in North Delhi.

They were released about 2 hours later, around 10 pm, according to Indian media outlet NDTV.

During the dharna, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi sat on a police barricade.

Soon after this incident, it was heard that Rahul and his sister, Congress MP Priyanka, have been detained by the police.

They were being taken away in a bus. But after a while, Rahul and Priyanka were seen arriving in front of the Akashvani building.

They were trying to enter the building. Gyanesh’s office, the Election Hall, was just 50 meters away from there.

Tensions were high in the capital since early morning on Tuesday as the opposition MPs began their campaign from the Makar Dwar gate of the Parliament building.

The police barricaded the procession midway. Initially, Rahul, Priyanka and other leaders started protesting on the road.

Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee was also at the protest site. Moments later, Rahul was seen climbing over the police barricade.

Police activity surrounding the opposition’s campaign was noticeable from this morning. The entire area, including the Parliament building, was surrounded by police.

Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi were temporarily detained on Tuesday afternoon as well.

Speaking to reporters at Akashvani Bhavan in the afternoon, Rahul Gandhi said that although the Election Commission office is just 50 meters away, opposition MPs are not being allowed to go there.

Rahul said that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission to conduct the elections properly.

He said that at least 300 MPs want to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

He asked, “What is the meaning of democracy if public representatives cannot meet with the Election Commission?” After being released from detention, Rahul said that no traitor will be spared.

He wrote in X, “To save the traitors of democracy, whatever was left of democracy has been reduced to dust.

There will be an ultimate reckoning – not a single traitor will be spared.”
