The global stage is set for South America as FIFA has officially named Brazil the host of the 2027 Women’s World Cup. This marks the first time the tournament will be played on the continent. On Wednesday, the world football body confirmed eight Brazilian cities that will stage matches, showing their confidence in Brazil’s readiness.
Maracana Confirmed for Grand Final
The famous Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, known for its football history and roaring crowds, will once again shine in a World Cup final. Just like in 2014, when Germany triumphed over Argentina in the men’s edition, the women’s final in 2027 will return to this legendary ground.
Host Cities Spread Across the Country
Other cities confirmed as hosts include Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Recife, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, and Salvador. These stadiums were all used during the 2014 Men’s World Cup, meaning they’re already equipped for major international fixtures. Brazil’s vast geography and vibrant culture are expected to offer fans a rich experience in every city.
Brazil’s Culture and Energy to Light Up the Tournament
FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised Brazil’s uniqueness, saying:
“From samba to frevo, from stunning beaches to cosmopolitan cities, the world will experience the energy, colour and warmth that only Brazil can offer.”
His words were echoed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, who added:
“The women’s game continues to grow at an extraordinary pace. Hosting the tournament in Brazil will inspire a new generation across the continent and beyond.”
Four Cities Left Out as Eight Chosen
Twelve cities had initially shown interest in becoming part of the historic tournament, but only eight made the final cut. Belem, Cuiaba, Manaus, and Natal were left out after the final review process by FIFA and Brazilian organizers. The reasons weren’t disclosed, but officials noted that stadium readiness and city infrastructure were major factors.
A New Chapter for Women’s Football
With the announcement, Brazil now turns its focus to preparations. As the host of a landmark event in women’s sports, the country is expected to not only deliver exciting matches but also promote the growth of the game across Latin America. For millions of fans and young girls watching, 2027 could be the start of something unforgettable.
