Kenyan artist Bien becomes the first from East Africa to feature on America’s The Breakfast Club show.

Kenya’s Bien-Aimé Baraza has taken East African music to a new level after becoming the first artist from the region to appear on the famous U.S. radio show The Breakfast Club. Hosted by DJ Envy, Jess Hilarious, and Charlamagne Tha God, the show is known for deep and open conversations with global stars.

Bien’s appearance wasn’t just a personal win—it showed the world that East African music is ready for the big stage. He used the chance to share his story, from being part of Sauti Sol to building his path as a solo artist. He also talked about how African musicians can reach the global market by uniting and blending different styles.

A Solo Run Full of Big Moves and Recognition

Since Sauti Sol took a break in 2023, Bien has moved fast and loud. His debut solo album, Alusa, Why Are You Topless?, dropped in November 2023 and quickly became a fan favourite, topping charts in Kenya and doing well across East Africa.

In 2025, he bagged the Trace Award for Best Artist in Eastern Africa, confirming his place among the continent’s top talents. Bien has also worked with big names like Ayra Starr and Adekunle Gold, showing his ability to adapt and connect with different sounds.

“We must support each other and keep creating fresh sounds to stay global,” Bien said during the interview.

Music fans and fellow artists praised his Breakfast Club moment, calling it a win for the whole region. As Bien continues his U.S. tour, many believe this is just the beginning of bigger things for him—and for Afro-pop as a whole.
