AGRA (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa) has announced a substantial contribution to fortify Africa’s seed systems. This move supports the African Union’s (AU) Seed Sector Action Plan (2020-2030) under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

The initiative aims to address challenges in Africa’s seed systems, ensuring food and nutrition security across drought-prone regions. It will facilitate the development and commercialization of improved seed varieties, enhance quality assurance, increase farmer awareness, and improve sector coordination.

AGRA has committed $3 million over three years to Seeds2B Africa, a social enterprise based in Kenya. This investment targets smallholder farmers in Kenya, Malawi, and Tanzania, focusing on resilience, food security, and improved livelihoods.

Since its inception in 2006, AGRA has driven significant advancements in Africa’s agricultural landscape, including funding the development of 659 improved crop varieties and supporting 119 local seed companies that have benefited over 25 million farmers across 18 countries.

The announcement coincides with the African Union Extraordinary Summit on CAADP held in Uganda. This summit serves as a platform for agricultural transformation, aiming to position Africa as a global leader in food systems.

AGRA President Dr. Agnes Kalibata highlighted the importance of resilient seed systems, emphasizing AGRA’s dedication to working with partners and leveraging collective expertise to advance agriculture across sub-Saharan Africa.
