Roselyn Akombe has reminded Kenyans of the 60 lives lost during the 2024 anti-tax protests, sharing the victims’ names and urging voters to elect leaders who listen to the people.

Former IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe took to social media to share the names of 60 Kenyans who died during protests against the proposed 2024 Finance Bill. She called on citizens to choose politicians who respond to public concerns in the upcoming general elections.

Reports from the Kenya Human Rights Commission show that over 50 people were killed by police during the demonstrations, while dozens more remain missing under unclear circumstances.

Meanwhile, Interior PS Raymond Omollo condemned efforts to block compensation for the victims, assuring that President William Ruto’s administration is committed to supporting affected families.

Omollo warned that anyone opposing the compensation process is acting against the public interest.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also weighed in, urging compensation for victims’ families and calling for reconciliation and peace.

The protests began in June 2024, triggered by proposed tax increases in the Finance Bill. Security forces clashed with demonstrators, resulting in at least 39 deaths and over 360 injuries, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

The government later withdrew the bill, but the loss of life remains a stark reminder of the cost of public unrest.
