A major crackdown on counterfeit goods has led to the arrest of a Chinese national in Gikomba Market, after authorities intercepted fake socks and assorted apparel valued at about Ksh50 million.
The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) made the arrest following complaints from several global brands. The companies raised concerns that their trademarks were being used without permission, prompting the agency to begin surveillance and trace the distribution chain.
During the Friday operation, ACA officers recovered 65,000 pairs of counterfeit socks and other items. The goods were reportedly routed through Uganda in an attempt to hide their true origin before entering Kenya.
Investigators believe the suspect played a central role in distributing fake merchandise across Nairobi and other urban centres.
Officers said the items were meant to hit the market during the busy December shopping season. The agency warned that counterfeit clothing often exposes consumers to health and safety risks because the materials do not meet required standards.

Officials further noted that such illegal trade causes heavy losses to legitimate manufacturers and retailers, especially during the festive season when demand is high.
The suspect is being held at Kamukunji Police Station as authorities pursue his wider network. Investigators are focusing on the supply trail, cross-border movements, and local collaborators who may be involved in transporting or selling the stock.
ACA officers also confirmed that the seized goods carried well-known international brand names but were made from low-quality materials.
The agency has now increased market surveillance in areas commonly associated with counterfeit distribution, including Gikomba, Eastleigh, Kamukunji, and parts of the Nairobi city centre.
