Can Zambia afford to export 200,000 tonnes of maize without affecting local supply and mealie meal prices – is the question most are asking following the signing of a landmark maize supply agreement worth US$77 million, aimed at strengthening regional food security and fostering economic cooperation between Malawi and Zambia.
The agreement, signed in Lilongwe, Malawi, will see Zambia export 200,000 metric tonnes of maize grain to Malawi through the two countries’ national food reserve agencies — Zambia’s Food Reserve Agency (FRA) and Malawi’s National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA).
Zambia’s minister of agriculture Reuben Mtolo says the maize export agreement will not compromise domestic food security, assuring the public that the Food Reserve Agency will continue to safeguard national reserves while honouring regional commitments.
Mtolo has further noted that the deal will generate socio-economic benefits for Zambia by stimulating trade, creating jobs, and reinforcing the country’s position as a key player in regional food stability.
“This agreement is a testament to Zambia’s role as a dependable partner in promoting food security, economic cooperation, and diplomatic engagement within the Southern African region,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mtolo says the agreement is a demonstration of Zambia’s dedication to regional solidarity and humanitarian cooperation.
“Zambia stands ready to actualise the directive given by the two Heads of State. We are pleased to collaborate with Malawi in the spirit of regional development and mutual support,” Mr. Mtolo said.
He adds that the maize earmarked for export will be sourced from Chipata in Eastern Province, a move intended to reduce transport costs and stimulate local economic activity.
And in In her remarks, Malawi’s agriculture minister, Roza Mbilizi expressed gratitude to the Zambian government and its people for responding swiftly to Malawi’s request for strategic maize support.
“This maize procurement deal will play a critical role in stabilising Malawi’s food supply as we address challenges caused by climate change and increased demand for staple foods,” she said.
The deal follows a recent telephone conversation between President Hakainde Hichilema and Malawian President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, during which the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and tackling food insecurity in the region.
