42 killed in bus crash in northern South Africa
A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of 42 people after a bus overturned on the N1 highway in Limpopo on Sunday night.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed that the bus was travelling on a steep stretch of road when it lost control and overturned.
According to authorities, the bus was en route from the Eastern Cape to Harare, Zimbabwe, carrying dozens of passengers at the time of the crash.
Emergency Teams Recover Bodies and Rescue Survivors
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said emergency services worked through the night to recover bodies and rescue survivors trapped in the wreckage.
“Forty-nine other people have been taken to various hospitals in Louis Trichard, Siloam. The exact cause of the crash has not been determined and investigations are ongoing,” Zwane stated.
The scene was described as chaotic as rescue teams continued to search through the mangled bus for any additional victims.
Authorities have yet to determine what caused the bus to overturn, but early reports suggest that road conditions and the steep terrain could have contributed to the tragedy.
RTMC officials have launched a full investigation to uncover the exact circumstances behind the crash, which has left dozens of families mourning.
The RTMC has urged motorists to exercise caution, especially when travelling on long-distance routes and steep road sections.
