Gachagua recalls serving as Uhuru’s aide between 2001–2006.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken fondly about his time working as Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal assistant, describing it as one of the most defining experiences of his political life. He revealed that between 2001 and 2006, he was tasked with political mobilisation and strategy for the then-rising leader.

“In 2002, when Uhuru made his first attempt at the presidency, we already knew victory was unlikely. The plan was to set him on a bigger political path for the future,” Gachagua explained.

According to Gachagua, those years gave him valuable lessons in political organisation and leadership. He noted that the effort eventually paid off when Uhuru went on to serve as Kenya’s president for a decade. “It is a journey I am proud of, part of my resume of making presidents,” he said.

The former DP praised Uhuru Kenyatta as a leader who listened and respected those he worked with. He said the experience under him continues to guide his own style of leadership.

Gachagua dismissed claims of a strained relationship with Uhuru, stressing that political rivalry should not be taken as personal hostility. “Campaigns have no rules. Campaigning is not a church affair, and nothing said was personal,” he remarked.

Drawing comparisons to Uhuru and William Ruto’s past rivalry, Gachagua noted that politics is about building bridges after contesting. He said leaders should rise above divisions and put the country first. “It’s all part of the game,” he concluded.
