Reuben Waithaka, from Kiambu County, disappeared in Alabama, U.S., nearly five months ago.

What was meant to be a joyful family gathering turned into a nightmare after 68-year-old Reuben Waithaka vanished in Calera, Alabama, just one day after arriving from Kenya.

Waithaka had flown out in May 2025 to witness his grandson’s high school graduation, but on the morning of Sunday, May 15, he stepped out of his son’s house and never returned.

Doorbell camera footage recorded his last appearance at 11:08 a.m., showing him dressed in khaki trousers, a blue-and-white checked shirt, and black shoes.

The family reported the case immediately, prompting a large-scale search by the Calera Police Department.

Authorities have since deployed drones, helicopters, thermal cameras, tracking dogs, and off-road vehicles in their hunt. Despite these efforts, Waithaka’s whereabouts remain unknown nearly five months later.

The disappearance has left Waithaka’s family in both Kenya and the U.S. devastated.

“We still hold on to hope,” a relative said, describing the painful wait for news.

The Calera Police Department has assured the family of its commitment to the case and urged the public to share any information that might help.

Anyone with details has been asked to contact the department at 205-668-3505.

For Waithaka’s loved ones, a trip meant for celebration has turned into months of agony. As searches continue, the family clings to hope that answers and closure will come soon.
