Malawi Elections: President Chakwera’s Allies Allegedly Manipulating Results in Desperate Attempt to Retain Power
It is now an undeniable truth across Malawi: President Lazarus Chakwera has lost the elections. Despite this, two of his loyalists,MEC Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi and MACRA Director General Daud Suleiman, are reportedly working behind the scenes to manipulate the election figures in a desperate bid to undermine the clear victory of the leading contender, Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Our investigative team has gathered direct evidence, having witnessed both Mpesi and Suleiman entering the Warm Heart Villas, owned by businessman Khato, where MACRA’s broadcasting monitoring units are based. The latest of such meetings took place on Thursday morning.
Reports from a range of polling stations across the country overwhelmingly show Mutharika securing enough votes to claim the Presidency, a position he lost in 2020.
However, The Investigator Magazine has learned that despite this, Mpesi and Suleiman are struggling to manipulate the Smartmatic voting system after being locked out by a security agency tasked with ensuring election integrity.
In a troubling development, IT experts at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) were replaced by five individuals closely linked to Mpesi, while the former staff have faced harassment.
Some have been accused of leaking sensitive data to the opposition, with the police sent to intimidate and pressure them into silence.
On Wednesday evening, as it became clear that Mutharika was headed for a decisive victory, Suleiman is alleged to have promised to deliver a win for Chakwera, or at the very least, force a rerun, by manipulating the data already entered into the system, which remains inaccessible after security measures were implemented.
According to our sources, Mpesi and Suleiman were planning to meet with President Chakwera to brief him on their latest efforts to either secure a manipulated win or orchestrate a rerun.
However, the data collected by MEC which was posted showing percentage of voters across , has complicated these efforts. It reveals a discrepancy that could potentially expose their scheme, if they continue to use the same data from the system, voter figures will rise drastically, from the projected 4.6 million to over 6 million.
The Investigator Magazine has also been informed that Mpesi has appeared increasingly erratic in recent days, visibly stressed and agitated as the reality of their loss sinks in. He had previously promised a victory for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), but the results are now threatening to prove otherwise.
Despite the mounting evidence of Chakwera’s defeat, MCP has resorted to desperate measures to save face. Sources suggest that Colleen Zamba, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, has been mobilizing MCP supporters to claim victory, even as results continue to show overwhelming rejection of the ruling party across Malawi.
MCP has failed to secure a win in over 18 districts, and now it appears they are attempting to manipulate the registered data to present their strongholds as the only areas showing significant support.
Two former cabinet ministers from the MCP, who have chosen to speak off-the-record, confirmed to The Investigator Magazine that they have accepted the reality of losing the election. They also made it clear that those working to manipulate the results are on their own.
“We all know voter turnout was low, and the results were being monitored at every stage,” one former minister explained. “Any attempt to change the final figures will expose everything that was done behind closed doors. We lost in the South, East, and North, it’s unfortunate, but it’s the truth.”
In an alarming sign of internal fractures, some MCP operatives have been recording each other’s activities and passing the information on to various factions, further complicating the party’s already fragile position.
Stay tuned for the full story tonight, as we reveal names, times, places, and key details that will shed light on the efforts to manipulate Malawi’s election results.
