From Power to Poverty: Moi-Era Minister Now Struggles to Survive

A former powerful minister from Makueni is now living in poverty.

Once a towering political figure in the Moi era, a former Cabinet Minister from Makueni now lives in shocking poverty. His second wife, once known for her glamour, allegedly chased him away, leaving him without shelter or support. He lost his luxurious homes in Karen and Mua Hills after being evicted, a far cry from the wealth and power he once commanded.

The politician divorced his first wife, a medical professional, in 2002. She later built her own home in Kitengela and raised their children, who eventually stood by her after the separation. Isolated from his family, the ex-minister today reportedly struggles to afford even basic meals.

His downfall was not only personal but also political. Once an ally of the late Nicholas Biwott, he later clashed with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, a move that shattered his career ambitions. Without strong networks, his hopes of reclaiming political glory quickly faded away.

His story is not unique. Many Moi-era loyalists, once untouchable, later fell into despair. President Daniel arap Moi’s reign thrived on divide-and-rule, with politicians outshining one another in loyalty contests. Names such as Kariuki Chotara, Shariff Nassir, Joseph Kamotho, Justus Ole Tipis, Ezekiel Bargetuny, Mulu Mutisyia, David Okiki Amayo, and Hezekiah Oyugi all enjoyed immense influence only to lose relevance after Moi’s exit.

For today’s politicians, his life remains a sharp reminder: power is temporary, alliances are fragile, and loyalty to political kings rarely guarantees a soft landing.
