Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has quietly returned to Kenya after a high-profile political tour of the United States, where he met diaspora communities, courted political allies, and officially announced his 2027 presidential ambitions.

Matiang’i landed in Nairobi early Wednesday and went straight to his Karen home.

In speeches across US cities, Matiang’i urged Kenyans abroad to play a decisive role in shaping the nation’s political future.

“I am a presidential candidate in 2027,” he declared during a streamed address, promising transparent, accountable, people-focused leadership.
“We cannot build the future of Kenya without the diaspora… I understand government like the back of my hand.”

While in Maryland, Matiang’i held a private meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, fuelling speculation of opposition realignment.
Gachagua later said:

“We discussed several issues affecting our country and our liberation cause… our commitment to the people of Kenya is unwavering.”

Separately, Gachagua ended his own US tour earlier than planned, citing “very successful” engagements but regret at not completing his multi-state schedule. His Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is now rushing to prepare for the November 27, 2025, by-elections, a key test for the opposition’s grassroots strength.

While abroad, Gachagua accused President William Ruto’s government of security lapses and even collusion with Al-Shabaab — claims Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen blasted as “reckless and dangerous,” demanding Gachagua record a statement with the DCI.

Analysts say the November mini-polls will serve as a litmus test for both the united opposition and UDA: A strong DCP showing could boost Gachagua’s standing as a central opposition figure. UDA dominance would reinforce President Ruto’s grip on power.

Meanwhile, Matiang’i’s return marks the start of an aggressive campaign phase that could see alliances shift rapidly before 2027.
