PSG coach Luis Enrique leaves Gianluigi Donnarumma out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup.
Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has confirmed that Gianluigi Donnarumma will not be part of the squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham. Speaking in Udine, Enrique said the decision followed the club’s acquisition of Lucas Chevalier from Lille.
“These are always difficult decisions to make. I can only speak highly of Donnarumma; he is undoubtedly one of the best in his position and an even better person, but we were looking for a different type of goalkeeper. My goal is to improve the team, and the club supports me,” Enrique stated.
Donnarumma, 26, who helped PSG secure their first-ever Champions League title last season with a 5–0 win over Inter Milan, voiced his frustration in an Instagram post.
“From the first day I arrived, I gave everything to defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. Unfortunately, someone has decided I can no longer be part of the group. I am disappointed and disheartened,” he wrote.
“I hope to say goodbye to the fans at the Parc des Princes as it should be done.”
Since joining AC Milan in 2021, Donnarumma has made 161 appearances for PSG, winning seven trophies and playing a key role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph. He is now attracting interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.
PSG captain Marquinhos admitted it is a tough moment for the squad, noting that similar exits have happened to other top players in the past. Enrique’s side will kick off their Ligue 1 title defence on Sunday with an away game against Nantes.
