Scott McTominay among 30 shortlisted for 2025 Ballon d’Or.
Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has been named in the 30-man shortlist for the 2025 men’s Ballon d’Or, making history as the first Scot to earn a nomination since Ally McCoist in 1987. The winner will be revealed on 22 September.
Less than a year after leaving Manchester United for Napoli in a £25 million deal, McTominay, 28, enjoyed a dream debut season in Italy. His 12 goals in 34 league appearances helped Napoli lift the Serie A title, earning him the league’s Player of the Year award.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele leads the favourites after inspiring his side to Champions League success. Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal and Brazilian winger Raphinha are also strong challengers, while Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is back in the running.
From England’s top flight, Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Viktor Gyokeres, Liverpool quartet Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, and Florian Wirtz, plus Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, have all cut.
Alongside the Ballon d’Or, the nominees for the Yashin Trophy (best goalkeeper), the Kopa Trophy (best U21 player), and the Johan Cruyff Trophy (best male coach) have also been confirmed, with notable names like Luis Enrique, Lamine Yamal, and Emiliano Martinez among the frontrunners.
