Ruth Chepngetich has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance.
Kenya’s long-distance running star, Ruth Chepngetich, is now facing a provisional suspension after a drug test confirmed the presence of a banned substance in her system. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) disclosed that her sample, taken on 14 March 2025, contained hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a substance banned under anti-doping rules.
Chepngetich’s urine sample revealed a staggering 3,800 nanograms per millilitre of HCTZfar above the acceptable reporting level of 20 ng/mL set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The substance is commonly used to treat high blood pressure or water retention, but is also known for its use in hiding the presence of other performance-enhancing drugs.
The 30-year-old shocked the world when she shattered the women’s marathon world record at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, clocking an incredible 2:09:56. Her time beat the previous record set by Ethiopian Tigst Assefa by nearly two minutes. That performance is now being viewed in a new light as investigations into her case continue.
Following the test results, Chepngetich was initially not suspended when she was informed in April. However, three days later, she voluntarily stepped aside from the competition. Now, after further investigations, the AIU has formally charged and provisionally suspended her from the sport.
Official Statement from AIU
“In the intervening months, the AIU continued its investigation and today issued a notice of charge and imposed its provisional suspension,”
Brett Clothier, Head of the AIU
The development adds another blow to Kenya’s athletics image, with Chepngetich joining a growing list of elite runners caught up in doping controversies. The final ruling on her case will depend on the outcome of further proceedings.
