Kenya U20 star Aldrine Kibet to join Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo in a €6 million (approx. Ksh900 million) deal.
Kenyan football prodigy Aldrine Kibet is on the brink of history, finalising a €6 million move to Celta Vigo, a top-flight Spanish club competing in La Liga. The move marks a significant milestone in the 18-year-old’s rapid rise from local school football to the European elite.
Kibet first caught national attention while playing for St. Anthony’s Boys High School in Kitale, where he captained the team to national glory at the KSSSA tournament in August 2023. His standout performance earned him both the Most Valuable Player and top scorer awards after registering 25 goals and 27 assists.
Former Harambee Stars midfielder David Kenga, now based in Spain, scouted Kibet and helped him join Nàstic Sports Academy, a talent development hub tied to Gimnàstic de Tarragona, a club that plays in Spain’s third division. Kibet’s time at the academy refined his skills and opened the door to the big stage.
Now, Celta Vigo, also known as Os Celestes, has signed Kibet to bolster their squad. The club, based in Vigo, Galicia, plays at the Balaídos Stadium with a 24,870-seat capacity. While Celta has yet to win La Liga or the Copa del Rey, they have reached the domestic cup final three times.
The transfer has generated widespread excitement back home. Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris described the move as a “major milestone” for Kenyan football. Kibet’s parents are currently travelling to Spain ahead of his official unveiling scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
Kibet’s arrival is expected to inject fresh talent into the Celta Vigo squad as they aim to challenge for major honours. For Kenya, the move signals a bright future and a reminder of the potential hidden in local football.
