“They’re Punishing Me for Speaking Up” – Hiram Kimathi Breaks Silence on Controversial Transfer

Police officer Hiram Kimathi transferred to remote Todonyang after rejecting brutal police orders

Police constable Hiram Kimathi, who gained attention after publicly rejecting violent protest orders, has confirmed he’s been transferred from Kyumbi Station in Machakos to Todonyang, a remote outpost in Turkana County, 180km from Lodwar.

Speaking in a televised interview, Kimathi said he expected the transfer the moment his video went viral and sees it as a punishment for refusing to support brutality during protests.

“If they can send me that far just because I spoke up, it shows there’s a serious problem in the National Police Service,” he said.

Despite the challenges ahead, Kimathi said he’s not worried about being fired. He spoke calmly and confidently about life beyond the service.

“No one was born employed. If I lose my job, I’ll go back to my people and start over. Maybe KTN will hire me,” he joked.

Kimathi criticised the Inspector General Douglas Kanja, saying he could have turned him into a voice of reason inside the service. Instead of using violence, the IG should have leaned on community policing and public dialogue, he argued.

“The bond between police and the public is already weak. Talking to people can solve many problems.”

Kimathi made it clear he won’t refuse to report to Todonyang, but strongly believes the move is not genuine. He says he was “handpicked” by the transfer panel in a way that feels targeted and unfair.

“Why only me, out of all officers in the country?” he asked.

The constable explained he has already served in tough zones and deserves a better postlike in Nairobi, where he can support his young family. Being sent back to remote hardship zones, he said, is simply a way of punishing him for being vocal.

“This posting is not about service it’s a slap for standing by the Constitution.”
