WFP Raises Red Flag as Sudan Refugee Crisis Hits Breaking Point

WFP warns of deep funding gaps threatening food aid for Sudanese refugees.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has issued an urgent warning — life-saving food support for millions of refugees fleeing Sudan’s war could soon run out due to a severe funding shortfall.

If more money doesn’t come in quickly, key operations in places like Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, and the Central African Republic could grind to a halt in a matter of weeks.

Sudan’s brutal conflict between government forces and the RSF has now stretched past two years. The humanitarian cost continues to rise, with over 4 million people fleeing their homes.

Chad alone is hosting nearly a quarter of them, and WFP has already hinted that ration cuts are likely in the coming weeks if the cash doesn’t show up.

In Uganda, things are getting desperate. Many Sudanese refugees are surviving on barely 500 calories a day, less than what’s needed to stay healthy. Refugee support systems are stretched to the edge.

The hardest-hit are the children. Malnutrition levels in entry points like South Sudan and Uganda are now beyond emergency levels. Some kids are already starving when they arrive.

“This Is a Regional Crisis”

WFP Emergency Coordinator Shaun Hughes didn’t mince words. “This is not just one country’s problem. We’re seeing it play out across borders — in nations already dealing with conflict and food shortages.”

He warned that if more support doesn’t come fast, WFP will have to cut food supplies even further, putting millions at risk, especially children.

WFP is now calling on donors, development partners, and governments to urgently step in. Without fresh funds, the fragile safety net around Sudan’s refugees could collapse, pushing an already dire situation into full-blown catastrophe.
