Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini Controversial Divorce: South Africa’s Zulu King, Misuzulu kaZwelithini, has ignited controversy by filing for divorce from his first wife, Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela.
This move, seen as a break from long-standing Zulu customs, has left the nation astonished. Traditionally, Zulu monarchs maintain multiple wives, and divorce is virtually unheard of. The king’s decision challenges the cultural expectations placed on the royal family.
The Role of Marriage and Polygamy in Zulu Royalty
King Misuzulu, regarded as the “Lion of the Nation,” holds a ceremonial but influential position within South Africa. Polygamy is deeply rooted in Zulu culture and has historically been a symbol of royal success and unity. With a state-funded budget of several million dollars annually, the Zulu monarchy plays a significant socio-political role in the country. However, the king’s decision to dissolve his first marriage has raised concerns about his adherence to traditional values.
A Marriage Marked by Controversy
The king married Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela in 2021, just before ascending the throne. The union, which produced two children, was widely viewed as rushed. Cultural expert Prof. Musa Xulu noted that the king may have felt pressured to be married before taking on his royal duties.
However, the relationship soon soured, leading to the couple living separately for over a year. In December 2023, King Misuzulu officially filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Legal Battle Over the Royal Divorce
Queen kaMayisela fought back, taking legal action to halt the king’s plans to remarry. Her argument centered on the legality of bigamy, as their marriage was conducted under civil law rather than traditional Zulu customs. However, the court dismissed her case, ruling that she had previously agreed to the king’s polygamous lifestyle. Following the decision, the king prepared to marry his third wife, Nomzamo Myeni, though the ceremony was unexpectedly postponed.
Second Wife’s Status Remains Unclear
Adding to the turmoil, King Misuzulu’s second wife, Queen Nozizwe kaMulela, has not been seen at royal events for some time. While lobola (bride price) was paid for her in 2022, reports suggest that the marriage rituals remain incomplete. Royal insiders speculate that the king may question the legitimacy of the individuals who arranged the marriage on his behalf.
The Search for a New Queen
Despite setbacks, the king’s aides have confirmed that another potential bride, Sihle Mdluli, is being considered as a senior queen. Hailing from a royal lineage, she could be named the “mother of the nation,” a prestigious title within the Zulu monarchy. However, Prof. Xulu doubts whether this wedding will take place, as the king’s relationships often face challenges before reaching completion.
Royal Governance and Internal Struggles
Beyond his personal life, King Misuzulu has made controversial leadership decisions, including installing himself as chairman of a powerful land trust that controls 2.8 million hectares in KwaZulu-Natal. His move to suspend board members has sparked tensions with the government, which warns that he may be required to account for the trust’s operations in parliament—a situation that could undermine his royal authority.
Ongoing Succession Battle
The king’s turbulent reign has also revived a long-standing dispute over the Zulu throne. His half-brother, Prince Simakade Zulu, continues to challenge his legitimacy. Though President Cyril Ramaphosa officially recognized King Misuzulu, a court ruling later declared the coronation process unlawful. An appeal is ongoing, keeping the battle for the throne alive.
