DCI arrests fashion designer Emmaculate Odhiambo Odhuno and alleged accomplice Benson Odero Gember.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested celebrated Kenyan fashion designer Emmaculate Odhiambo Odhuno alongside her alleged partner-in-crime, Benson Odero Gember, in connection with a high-profile gold scam targeting foreign investors.
Police say the two had been on the run for months before finally being tracked down and captured.
The case dates back to September 2024, when two investors from Dubai were enticed with an offer to buy 35 kilograms of gold a deal that promised huge returns.
After days of convincing negotiations, the investors landed at JKIA and were chauffeured to a luxury Kilimani hotel. There, they met a well-coordinated network posing as KRA Customs officers, Ministry of Mining officials, and even licensed private jet operators.
Before the truth dawned, the conmen had already pocketed USD 54,300 (about KSh7 million).
The duo were arraigned in court on Thursday, where they both pleaded not guilty. The court set August 18, 2025, as the date to rule on their bond terms.
Meanwhile, the DCI is urging both locals and foreigners to exercise extreme caution when entering gold trade agreements in Kenya, warning that con syndicates are becoming more sophisticated.
