Former President Uhuru Kenyatta this week made remarks suggesting that he has rejected proposals from some leaders who wanted him to join them ahead of the 2027 General Election.
As 2027 draws closer, Uhuru’s statement makes it clear that he remains a key player in Kenyan politics and that, despite retirement, he will play an important role in shaping the country’s future in 2027.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, during the burial of former Lugari MP the late Cyrus Jirongo in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, Uhuru strongly denied claims that he is interfering in ODM politics.
He said such accusations are often used by politicians whose efforts to win influence have failed.
“When someone fails in the path of trying to endear themselves where they want to, they must look for someone to blame and say people are rejecting them because of so-and-so,” Uhuru said.
Political analysts say Uhuru’s firm stance signals that he is not ready to “swallow the bait” or remain silent when blamed.
According to political analyst Dr. Peter Macharia says Uhuru is trying to protect his political legacy and his stature as a retired statesman.
“Uhuru knows he still wields significant political influence. His statement is a warning to those who want to use him as a scapegoat for their own conflicts,” he said.
He added that the remarks also suggest Uhuru is skeptical about cooperating with President William Ruto within the broad-based government.
“Remember his party has a presidential candidate, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, who has been working with the opposition, even as some whispers suggest he is a UDA project. Uhuru’s remarks may indicate that his party has rejected any cooperation with the current administration,” Dr. Gichuki said
