Tension High As Armed Gunmen Ambush Cattle Lorry in Samburu, Kill Police Officer and Businesswoman

Fear and panic swept through Samburu after armed gunmen ambushed a cattle lorry along a busy road, killing a police officer and a businesswoman on the spot before fleeing with stolen livestock.

Residents of Naisunyei were left in shock on Thursday evening after a deadly ambush claimed two lives in a brutal attack linked to banditry along a key transport route.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at around 5pm when a lorry ferrying cattle from Lolnguniani Market to Achers Post was ambushed by heavily armed gunmen who had reportedly hidden along the roadside.

As the vehicle approached, the attackers suddenly opened fire, triggering chaos and panic.

A police officer identified as Constable Julius Muthaura, who was escorting the cattle to guarantee safe passage, was shot dead during the ambush.

A businesswoman and cattle trader, Khadija Ibrahim, also lost her life after being hit by bullets at close range.

Four other men who were accompanying the livestock sustained serious gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. Their condition was described as critical by medical personnel.

After overpowering the escorts, the attackers made away with 17 head of cattle before disappearing into nearby areas believed to be hideouts used by armed groups.

The slain officer’s AK47 rifle, loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition, was later recovered at the scene by responding security teams.

The bodies of the two victims were moved to the mortuary as police launched a manhunt for the assailants.

Security officers were immediately deployed across the area to pursue the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.

The latest attack has reignited concerns over insecurity in parts of Samburu County, where residents say armed ambushes have continued despite intensified security operations.

The region is among areas covered under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a government-led initiative aimed at curbing banditry and restoring peace.

While authorities acknowledge that the operation has reduced crime in some zones, locals argue that deadly attacks like this one show the situation remains fragile.

Many are now demanding increased patrols, improved intelligence gathering, and long-term solutions to protect traders, security officers, and innocent civilians.

As investigations continue, tension remains high in Naisunyei and surrounding areas, with residents fearing further attacks along major roads used by traders and transporters.
