Standard Group’s Collins Kweyu arrested in Nairobi after texting a High Court judge.

Standard Group journalist Collins Kweyu has been arrested and is being held at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. His arrest followed a text message he sent to a High Court judge while seeking clarification on allegations raised by a complainant.

Kweyu explained that the complainant, who had the judge’s contact, shared it with him. He then texted the judge to confirm the claims.

“After I listened to the claims, the complainant who had the contact of the judge gave it to me. I sent a text asking if the claims were true. The judge even responded, saying he is a saved man and doesn’t do what I had asked. I was shocked to be arrested and framed,” Kweyu said.

The High Court judge took offence at the message and reported the matter at Kehancha Police Station in Migori County. Soon after, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Migori tracked Kweyu to Nairobi and arrested him.

Police say the case is being investigated under Sections 27 and 29 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018. The sections cover cyber harassment and identity theft.

In addition, DCI officers moved to court and obtained warrants to search Kweyu’s documents and phones. The same order extended to his co-accused, identified as Benson Lengolenyang alias Ben Limo and Martin Njoroge.

Kweyu has maintained that his actions were strictly professional and part of standard journalistic practice.

“I only wanted a balanced story by reaching out to the judge for comment,” he insisted.
