Free Snapchat Memories storage is capped at 5GB.
Snap Inc. has announced a major change to its Memories feature, limiting free cloud storage to 5GB. The update, unveiled on September 26, 2025, introduces paid subscription options for users who need more space.
The cheapest plan will start at $1.99 per month for 100GB of storage in the U.S., with additional tiered plans expected in the coming months.
The new policy will officially take effect in October 2026. Users will have a 12-month grace period to manage or export their data. During this time, older memories will be preserved, but any new content that exceeds the 5GB cap risks being deleted.
The announcement has triggered widespread reaction, with many users expressing frustration over the end of what was once marketed as “unlimited” secure storage. Some users said they may turn to phone backups or rival apps to safeguard their memories.
In response to the criticism, Snap Inc. said the changes are aimed at making storage more sustainable while giving heavy users flexible options to expand their space.
The update marks a significant change for Snapchat, as Memories has long been promoted as a safe archive where users could revisit their digital lives without limits.
